Our Picks: Top 5 Children’s Books to Relish with Family

Even as infants, it is easy to get lost in a good tale. Reading a nice children’s story is the perfect way to slip into bedtime. With a plethora of children’s books out there, you must be wondering where to begin.

We here at Feeding Friend have devised a list of our Top 5 children’s books.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carl

One of the greatest children’s classics of all time, The Very Hungry Caterpillar  takes us through the evolution of a caterpillar eating his way through an array of food to eventually pupate into a beautiful butterfly. The story is illustrated through gorgeous pictures – a signature of Eric Carl and his books! This one is a classic for good reason and we highly recommend adding this to the list.

The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister

Colours, colours and more COLOURS! The Rainbow Fish illustrates the story of a fish named Rainbow Fish who has shiny, multi-colored scales. One day a small fish asks him if he could have one of his shiny scales, to which the Rainbow Fish refuses in a very rude manner. The other fish are very upset about his behaviour and don’t want to play with him anymore. Through this experience Rainbow Fish learns the value and importance of sharing and being considerate of others.  An excellent picturesque story with a good moral takeaway – something that will be easily relished by little ones.

Possum Magic by Mem Fox

An Australian classic that has been passed down through the years. Grandma Poss makes bush magic and her best trick of all is making Hush invisible. One day Hush wants to become visible again, Grandma Poss looks and looks, but she can’t find the right magic to make it happen. AH-HA! She  remembers that it is something to do with people food, not possum food. The story then takes us on a journey with these two as they set off on what becomes a fascinating culinary tour of Australia to find the magic that will make Hush visible again. Your kids will have their mouths watering in no time.

The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf 

A truly beautiful tale of a gentle bull who is different from his kind. All the other bulls run, jump, and butt their heads together in fights. Ferdinand, on the other hand, would rather sit and smell the flowers. This gorgeous story illustrates the beauty in owning your individuality whilst making us fall in love with the kind bull, Ferdinand. This book was recently made into an animated film too!

The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss

The Cat in the Hat is regarded as one of the best-selling storybook icons that this world has ever seen. Replicated into several films and retold countless times, this one is a must for your list. This children’s story revolves around an anthropomorphic cat who shows up at Sally’s house, makes a mess while entertaining her and her brother and cleans up with the help of his friends – just before Sally’s mother comes home. Enjoy sprinkles of humour paired with the depth that can only be seen by a Dr. Seuss classic.
